How we check accessibility

What is checked

Every page of lucasia.ai is scanned with axe-core, an open source accessibility engine, against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at levels A, AA and AAA. Each page is scanned in the light and dark themes, at desktop and phone widths, and the result is the worst of the four.

The scan runs on every change to the site before it is published. A change that lowers the level of any page fails and is not released until it is fixed.

How the level is worked out

A page reaches a level when the scan finds no failures at that level or any level below it. AAA means no automated failures at A, AA or AAA. The level of the whole site is the lowest level of any page. A page the scan has not covered yet shows "not checked yet" rather than a guess.

The latest results are public at lucasia.ai/a11y.json. The file lists each page, its level and how many rules failed at each level. It holds no personal data and no page content.

What an automated check cannot prove

Automated tools find some accessibility problems, not all of them. They check things a machine can measure, such as colour contrast, text alternatives being present, form labels, page language, landmarks and the names of buttons and links.

They cannot judge whether alternative text describes an image well, whether headings and wording make sense, whether the reading and focus order is logical, or how the site works with a screen reader, voice control or a keyboard alone. Items the tool cannot decide are left for a person to review and are not counted either way.

So the pill does not claim the site conforms to WCAG 2.2. It says what the automated check found, and we test the rest by hand as we build: keyboard use, visible focus, 7:1 text contrast in both themes, reduced motion and touch targets of at least 44 pixels.
